United Muslim Martial Arts (UMMA) Open Tournament 2010 @ DHIC

The United Muslim Martial Arts (UMMA) Open Tournament 2010 was a great success. This year, we invited schools from all martial arts styles and hosted the event at Dar-ul-Hijra Islamic Centre (DHIC) on May 15, 2010. We had many different schools outside of UMMA attend with their teachers and eight schools from UMMA. This year, we hosted a new weapons division where competitors demonstrated skills with a variety of weapons.

Divisions for competition ranged from novice children to advanced adult. Participants were very happy as there were many chances to win a medal or a trophy. Most importantly, all divisions were conducted safely and well supervised.

This was a good opportunity for da’wa as the program went smoothly and participants said that this was one of the best tournaments and they enjoyed themselves. It was great to see the martial arts and Muslim communities together having fun and finding common understanding through the principles of respect, discipline, courtesy and humility in all martial arts and Islam.

One of the highlights was the black belt men’s division. There was great competition and many close rounds. Different fighters demonstrated their varying styles and showed exceptional camaraderie by sharing advice about techniques and strategies after their fights. We invited black belts from outside UMMA to join us and train with us.

Insha Allah, we hope to build on the successes of this year for future tournaments and bring communities closer together while learning from each other.
